Lehrbach Castle

Lehrbach Castle consists of medieval ruins in Kirtorf that rise across three floors with entrance areas, wall sections, and palace elements including portals and fireplaces. The structure retains preserved window openings and shows how rooms were once arranged for both living and defense.

The castle was built around 1180 and became a fief of the von Lehrbach family in 1349. It was destroyed during the Thirty Years War in the 17th century and never rebuilt afterward.

The ruins display Gothic craftsmanship with their pointed arch windows and stepped gable design typical of medieval Hesse. Visitors can observe these details directly in the standing walls and preserved stone portals throughout the site.

The ruins are located at Hauptstraße 41 in Kirtorf and are open to explore freely without barriers. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven and the stone structures can be slippery when wet.

The site retains traces of a moat system that once encircled the main structure, revealing the original defensive lines. These ground-level depressions and ridges are subtle at first glance but become clear upon closer inspection.
