Burg Schweinheim

Burg Schweinheim is a medieval castle near Euskirchen where a corner tower and sections of fortified walls still stand today. These remains are incorporated into an active farming complex and show the dual-structure layout that medieval castles in this region typically had.

The castle was first mentioned in writing in 1333 as part of the Julich duchy's holdings in the region. Over the following centuries it lost importance and was gradually damaged, leaving behind only scattered architectural elements today.

The castle reflects how noble families built fortified homes to display their status in the region during the medieval period. These structures remain visible markers of the local landscape and tell of feudal organization in the Rhineland.

The castle ruins sit within an active farming property and are visible from outside during daylight, though the site is private land. It is best to view from the road or ask permission before entering the property.

Archaeologists digging at the site found a ceramic medieval piggy bank still holding coins from that era, making it one of Germany's earliest known examples. This object shows how people saved money in creative ways centuries ago.
