Ivenacker Eichen, Natural monument and game reserve in Ivenack, Germany.
Ivenacker Eichen is a natural monument and game reserve in Ivenack, Germany, that contains five especially ancient oaks with massive trunks. The oldest among them measure more than a meter thick at the trunk and stand scattered across a large woodland area.
The oaks began growing around a thousand years ago when Slavic settlers used the forest for grazing. Cistercian monks later took over the care and preserved the trees into the present day.
The area served for centuries as a wood pasture where pigs foraged for acorns beneath the canopy, helping to keep the forest floor open. Fallow deer now graze among the oaks in the enclosure, recalling this earlier use.
The treetop trail climbs upward and ends at an observation tower from which you can see over the canopy and as far as Lake Ivenack. The path is about 600 meters long and easy to walk.
One of the trees is so large that its timber volume is estimated at around 180 cubic meters, making it the most massive living oak in Germany. Scientists have found that some branches are already over a hundred years old themselves.
