Burgruine Flossenbürg

The castle rises on a 745-meter granite cliff above the Upper Palatinate region, featuring a residential tower and two inner courtyards within its fortified walls.

Count Berengar I of Sulzbach donated the castle to Berchtesgaden Abbey in 1125, initiating centuries of ownership changes between German emperors and Bavarian rulers.

The ruins include a preserved Romanesque fireplace chamber, demonstrating the architectural methods and living conditions of medieval German nobility.

The castle grounds remain open for visitors throughout the year, with the restored tower offering views across the Bavarian countryside.

The structure contains a separate square tower positioned 30 meters outside the main castle complex, serving as an additional defensive fortification.
