Burg Gieselwerder

Burg Gieselwerder is a medieval castle ruin on the western bank of the Weser River in Gieselwerder. The surviving foundations and stone walls reveal the original layout of a fortification covering roughly 40 by 20 meters.

The castle was founded in the 11th century and changed hands between the Archbishopric of Mainz and the Duchy of Brunswick over time. By 1583 it came under Hessian control and gradually lost its military importance.

The location takes its name from the medieval fortress that once dominated the valley. Today the community uses the site for public functions while maintaining a visible link to its past.

You can approach the castle remains easily from the Weser riverbank and view the foundations from different angles. The site is best explored on foot, especially when water levels are lower and the surrounding area becomes more accessible.

During bridge construction in 1899, workers uncovered oak planks holding iron cannonballs from the Thirty Years War in the riverbed below. These discoveries suggest the castle played a role in regional conflicts of that era.
