Burg Gieselwerder, Medieval castle ruins in Gieselwerder, Germany
The stone remains of Burg Gieselwerder stand on the western bank of the Weser River, featuring foundation walls and parts of a former watchtower.
Built in the 11th century, the castle changed ownership between the Archbishopric of Mainz and the Duchy of Brunswick before becoming part of Hesse in 1583.
The castle grounds now house the municipal town hall, connecting local administration with the historical heritage of the medieval fortification.
The castle site spans 40 by 20 meters and contains visible archaeological elements from the 12th and 13th centuries for visitors to examine.
During the construction of a bridge in 1899, workers discovered oak planks containing iron cannonballs from the Thirty Years War in the riverbed.
