Gnandstein Castle

Gnandstein Castle is a fortified complex near Frohburg that rises on a hill above the Wyhra River. The structure features a massive keep, strong stone walls with battlements, and a residential palace with Gothic architectural elements.

The castle was founded around 1200 by the von Schladebach family and served as a fortified stronghold. In the 15th century, it came under the control of the von Einsiedel family, who managed it for generations.

The castle contains art collections featuring pottery and paintings from different periods. The rooms show how residents once lived and what works they valued.

The building sits on a hilltop and is best reached on foot; limited parking is available nearby. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, as access involves walking on paved paths.

The complex underwent extensive renovation in the 1990s while preserving ancient Romanesque details and integrating them into modern reinforcement methods. This work allowed the structure to be stabilized without losing its historical character.
