Bunker Schwarzer See is a massive underground military complex near Falkenhagen covering more than 20,000 square meters (215,000 square feet). The structure spans multiple levels and stands as one of the largest subterranean military installations in the Brandenburg region.
The complex began operating in 1940 as a research laboratory for plasma physics related to military technology. Soviet forces took control after the war and converted it into a command center that remained strategically important throughout the Cold War.
The facility served as a complete military settlement where personnel lived and worked in separate zones designed for different functions. Soldiers had access to housing, medical care, and even entertainment spaces, creating a self-contained community beneath the earth.
Access to the facility is only possible through guided tours that explain the layout and different functional areas throughout the complex. Wear comfortable shoes since the underground passages and stairs can be uneven and require climbing.
Between 1940 and 1945 the facility produced chlorine trifluoride, a highly reactive chemical developed for military applications. This dangerous production operation remained completely secret for decades after the war ended.
