Greifenstein Castle, Medieval castle in Markt Heiligenstadt, Germany
Greifenstein Castle stands on a rocky hilltop, featuring a substantial four-winged building design with numerous towers and fortifications overlooking the surrounding valleys.
The castle, first documented in 1172, was destroyed during the Peasants' Revolt in the early 16th century before being rebuilt into its current structure.
The castle maintains an extensive collection of historical weapons and hunting trophies, reflecting the regional nobility's military and sporting heritage.
The castle opens daily from Easter onward, with guided tours available from 9:00 AM to 11:15 AM and 1:30 PM to 4:45 PM at 6 euros for adults.
The castle contains a remarkable 90-meter-deep well, which demonstrates the medieval engineering capabilities required for water access at such elevated positions.
