Burg Hardenberg, Medieval castle ruins in Velbert, Germany
Burg Hardenberg is a castle ruin in Velbert featuring a rectangular layout with rounded corners. The site is surrounded by a moat and protected by a ring wall that survives in parts today.
The fortress was built in the 11th or 12th century as the seat of the Lords of Hardenberg. A major fire destroyed it in the 13th century, after which it was not rebuilt.
The castle carries the name of its original lords and still displays the typical layout of a medieval fortress today. Visitors can trace this arrangement in the preserved ring wall and the surrounding moat.
The site is located on a mountain spur between the Neviges and Tönisheide districts. Visitors can explore the remains year-round, though sturdy footwear is recommended due to the terrain.
Excavations in 1888 and 2023 uncovered crossbow bolts, bronze buckles, and a gilded spur from the castle grounds. These discoveries offer rare glimpses into medieval military and courtly life.
