Burg Altenbolanden

Burg Altenbolanden is a castle built on a hilltop surrounded by water-filled moats in Bolanderhof. The ruins show a fortified structure with a residential tower and living quarters typical of medieval construction.

The castle arose around 1100 as the seat of the Lords of Bolanden and received its first written mention in 1184. It served as a key administrative center for the region during the medieval period.

The castle's name reflects the old settlement of Bolanden that once anchored regional identity in this area. Visitors can trace how this location shaped local ties and territorial connections over time.

A visit allows you to walk around the ruins and across the hilltop with good views of the surrounding countryside. Sturdy shoes are recommended since the terrain is uneven and parts of the structure protrude from the ground.

Archaeological digs between 1907 and 1908 uncovered the exact layout and size of the medieval buildings. These early investigations helped scholars understand how the fortress originally looked and functioned.
