Burg Altenbolanden, Medieval castle in Bolanderhof, Germany
The castle features stone foundations extending 4.5 meters deep, encircled by a water-filled moat surrounding the entire structure on the hill.
Built around 1100, the castle served as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Bolanden and received its first written mention in 1184.
Archaeological excavations between 1907 and 1908 revealed a square fortification with rounded corners and a rectangular residential tower measuring 9 by 6.5 meters.
The castle mound maintains a diameter of 55 meters and contains the remains of both a residential tower and a rectangular living quarters measuring 5.5 by 12 meters.
The structure transformed from Castle Neuenberge to Burg Altenbolanden, reflecting the changes in regional power dynamics during the medieval period.
