Burg Altenfels

Burg Altenfels is a castle ruin near Brilon that consisted of two separate fortification structures on a mountain ridge. The eastern remains include sections of outer walls and a northern tower, while the western section no longer exists.

The castle originated in the second half of the 11th century and was first documented in 1144 in a property register. It sustained damage from fire and later from quarrying activities.

The ruins reflect medieval fortification methods used across mountainous regions like this one. The visible walls show how castles were built and defended in that era.

Visiting the ruins requires hiking over hilly terrain with uneven ground in places. Wear appropriate footwear and exercise caution during wet or snowy conditions.

The western section of the castle was completely removed by quarrying operations, while the eastern structure was destroyed by fire in the 12th century. These two different destruction methods shape what visitors see today.
