Burg Altenfels, Medieval castle ruins in Brilon, Germany
Located at 486 meters elevation, Burg Altenfels consisted of two separate fortification structures on the mountain peak near Brilon-Rösenbeck.
The castle originated in the second half of the 11th century and received its first written mention in a property register from 1144.
The eastern castle remains include sections of outer walls and the northern tower, representing medieval fortification techniques in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The site of Burg Altenfels offers opportunities for archaeological exploration and research, with documented findings from different construction periods.
The western section of the castle disappeared due to quarry operations, while the eastern structure met its end through a fire in the 12th century.
