Kloster Bredelar

Kloster Bredelar is a monastery complex in Marsberg with stone buildings, high walls, and arched windows. The ensemble is organized around a central courtyard framed by covered walkways and garden spaces.

The monastery was founded in 1170 as a Premonstratensian convent for women and became a Cistercian abbey in 1196 under Archbishop Adolf I of Cologne. This transition shaped its development for centuries to come.

The monastery now houses the Theodorshütte Museum, which displays the region's craftsmanship heritage. Visitors can see historical tools and machinery that tell the story of local manufacturing traditions.

The grounds are accessible through the east entrance, and guided tours can be arranged by prior request. It is helpful to contact the local historical society beforehand to confirm opening times and tour availability.

The medieval Bredelar Bible, a significant manuscript from the monastery's early period, is now preserved at the University Library of Darmstadt. This work reveals the scholarly activities that once took place within these walls.
