Burgruine Lichtenegg, Medieval castle ruin in Birgland, Germany
Burgruine Lichtenegg is a medieval castle ruin set on a rocky ridge near Pommelsbrunn in the Birgland district of Bavaria. The surviving stone walls are spread across several levels of the ridge, surrounded by forest.
The castle was first recorded around 1300 in the Nuremberg Reichssalbbüchlein and passed through the hands of several lords over the following decades. It was destroyed in the 15th century and never rebuilt.
The ruin sits along a rocky ridge and draws walkers from nearby villages on weekends. Information panels on site describe finds from the area and give a sense of how the hilltop was used over the centuries.
The ruin is freely accessible all year and can be reached on foot via marked trails starting from the valley. Parts of the path are steep and rocky, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
Archaeological finds from the ridge show that people lived in this area long before the castle was built, going back several thousand years. Some of those finds are displayed in cases along the trail, so you can see them without visiting a museum.
