Lichtenstein Castle, Medieval castle ruins near Holzhausen, Germany

The castle remains include a neck ditch below the hill plateau and wall fragments at an elevation of 315 meters above sea level.

Built around 1225 by the Lords of Lichtenstein, the castle fell to destruction in 1298 during a military campaign by Counts John of Nassau and Henry of Solms-Burgsolms.

The site connects to the Three Castles Route, an 11-kilometer hiking trail that leads visitors through Greifenstein and Beilstein castle locations.

The castle ruins stand north of the Ulmbach Reservoir, next to the former military road that connected Frankfurt to Cologne through Wetzlar.

After its destruction, the Lichtenstein family relocated to a farmstead in Wallendorf, and the ruins passed through multiple owners until Count John of Nassau-Hadamar obtained control.
