Burg Lützelbach, Medieval castle ruins in Lützel-Wiebelsbach, Germany
Burg Lützelbach was a medieval castle whose foundations lie beneath the Protestant church and cemetery of Lützelbach today. The site sits on elevated ground and can be studied through the archaeological remains visible at cemetery level.
The castle served as the ancestral home of the Reiz von Breuberg family during the 12th century before they moved to establish Breuberg Castle. This relocation represented a significant shift in the family's power base in the region.
Archaeological excavations in 2001 revealed substantial sandstone foundation walls measuring 4.2 meters thick and 1.4 meters high beneath the cemetery grounds.
The site can be reached by walking through the cemetery, where information boards explain the history of what lies beneath. Visitors should expect an open-air setting and allow time to explore the burial grounds that now cover the ruins.
Stones from the original fortress were reused in the cemetery wall and church building between 1770 and 1774, making the castle's material legacy quite literal. Visitors walking the grounds can actually see and touch these repurposed blocks from medieval times.
