Mühlhäuser Schlösschen, Castle ruins in Rai-Breitenbach, Germany
Mühlhäuser Schlösschen is a medieval castle ruin in Rai-Breitenbach with a nearly square foundation measuring approximately 8.80 by 10 meters. The surviving walls stand primarily on the western side of the former structure.
The site originated in the medieval period as a fortified residence for lower nobility and may have housed a garrison from nearby Breuberg Castle. It served as an important dwelling during the Middle Ages for this social class.
The ruins show traces of medieval life discovered through pottery fragments unearthed during 1988 excavations. These findings provide insight into how people lived in this region during that era.
The ruins stand at 195 meters elevation in a narrow valley setting near the L 3259 road between Breuberg and Lützel-Wiebelsbach. The location is easily accessible and offers a good vantage point for exploring the surrounding countryside.
The basement construction method closely resembles that of the Templar House in Amorbach and the Toppler Castle beneath Rothenburg, showing regional building traditions. These parallels suggest an exchange of construction techniques among noble residences.
