Burgruine Reichenstein, Medieval castle ruins in Stadlern, Germany.
Burgruine Reichenstein is a medieval castle ruin located at 874 meters above sea level on the summit of Reichenstein mountain in the Oberpfälzer forest. The site still shows standing walls and the characteristic circular tower that defined the original fortress structure.
The fortress fell during the Hussite Wars in 1431, but Duke Johann von Neunburg reclaimed it through siege in September 1432. Following this conflict, the castle gradually lost its strategic importance and fell into decline.
The ruins still display medieval building techniques through its circular tower and standing wall sections from the original fortress. These remains tell of an era when such strongholds shaped daily life and controlled the surrounding lands.
The ruins are accessible via established hiking trails from Stadlern with clear markings throughout the route. Information panels on-site provide context about the site and help visitors understand the remaining structures.
The Upper Palatinate region holds the highest concentration of medieval fortifications in all of Germany, with dozens of castles like Frauenstein, Flossenbürg, and Leuchtenberg scattered throughout the area. This extraordinary density makes the region exceptional for history enthusiasts and hikers wanting to explore from one castle to another.
