Burg Merten

Burg Merten is a medieval castle in Eitorf that stands on elevated ground next to the Sieg River with defensive walls and a stone courtyard. The building shows typical defensive architecture of the period, with thick walls that protected the courtyard and inner areas.

The castle was first documented in writing in 1247 and then changed hands several times over the centuries. In 1541 the Hatzfeld family established their Hatzfeld-Merten line there and made it their residence.

The castle served as a seat of noble families who shaped and governed the region for centuries. Visitors today can still see traces of this aristocratic use in the preserved rooms and structures.

The building is located across from the former Merten monastery and serves as an easy landmark to find in the area. Visitors can spot it readily since the structure sits on elevated ground and is positioned near recognizable local features.

The east wing of the castle was once used as a school before being integrated back into the main structure during the 1930s. This dual function shows how the castle adapted over time to meet changing needs.
