Burg Merten, Medieval castle in Eitorf, Germany
The fortress stands on elevated ground near the Sieg River, featuring defensive walls and a central courtyard within its stone structure.
First documented in 1247, Burg Merten changed ownership multiple times, with the Hatzfeld family establishing their Hatzfeld-Merten lineage there in 1541.
The castle represents the architectural traditions of North Rhine-Westphalia, marking centuries of noble residence and regional governance.
Located opposite to the former Merten monastery, the castle remains a reference point for understanding medieval defensive structures in the region.
The east wing of the castle served as a school before being integrated back into the main structure in 1930.
