Burg Naumburg

Burg Naumburg is a medieval fortress located on a forested hilltop near Gladenbach that features an elongated oval shape. The structure contains thick walls and traces of a moat system, with a residential tower that served as the central stronghold.

Sophie of Brabant commissioned the fortress in the mid-13th century following the loss of nearby strongholds to rivals. Archaeological evidence suggests the site remained inhabited and in use for several centuries.

The fortress shows how people built defenses on hilltops during the Middle Ages to protect and control their territories. Today visitors can still see the thick walls that demonstrate this defensive purpose.

The ruins sit on wooded, hilly terrain, so sturdy footwear and basic fitness are helpful for visiting. It is best explored on foot, allowing time to carefully examine the remaining walls and structures.

Excavations in the 1950s uncovered pottery fragments spanning several centuries, showing the fortress had continuous use over a long period. These finds help trace the site's history from the 1200s through the 1400s.
