Burg Naumburg, Medieval castle in Gladenbach, Germany
The oval fortress sits on the forested Lammerich hill at 357 meters elevation, extending 45 meters in length and 22.5 meters in width.
Sophie von Brabant commissioned the construction of Naumburg Castle in the mid-13th century as a strategic response to the conquest of Burg Blankenstein in 1255.
The castle represents the military architecture of medieval Hesse, featuring defensive elements including walls up to 3.30 meters thick and a surrounding moat.
Archaeological excavations in 1954 and 1959 revealed pottery fragments from the 13th to 15th centuries, indicating continuous habitation during this period.
The fortress contained a square residential tower measuring 9.9 by 10.6 meters with foundation walls reaching 2.20 meters in thickness.
