Burgruine Zabelstein

Burgruine Zabelstein is a castle ruin located on a hilltop in the northern Steigerwald mountains in Bavaria, Germany. The remains show traces of walls and structural elements from when it served as a fortified stronghold.

The fortress was built around 1000 and later became the strongest fortification of the Würzburg diocese. After the original family that constructed it died out, the property changed hands several times.

The ruins carry the name of a medieval family that once ruled from this location and remains rooted in local history. Visitors can sense the connection to the past through the site's physical layout and remains.

The site is accessible via several hiking trails and sits on a hilltop with good views of the surroundings. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow time for the uphill walk.
