Zabelstein, Mountain summit in Schweinfurt, Germany.
Zabelstein is a forested summit in the Naturpark Steigerwald, located south of Schweinfurt, rising to about 1,600 feet (489 meters) above sea level. At the top stands an observation tower that allows visitors to look out over the surrounding wooded hills in every direction.
For centuries, this summit served as a reference point for travelers crossing the Steigerwald, as it rises clearly above the surrounding forest. Over time it shifted from a navigational marker to a destination in its own right, with the observation tower built to welcome visitors.
The summit draws walkers from the surrounding villages, especially on weekends when families and groups make the climb a regular outing. At the top, people tend to gather around the tower and take in the view over the forested hills of the Steigerwald.
The summit can be reached via the Zabelsteinstraße trail, and there is parking at the base of the path. The climb is gradual and well marked, so most walkers can manage it without any special gear.
Although Zabelstein is barely 1,600 feet (489 meters) tall, the tower at the top lifts you above the surrounding treetops so completely that the horizon opens in a way that feels out of proportion to the mountain's modest height. The dense forest on all sides actually makes the view from above feel more open than it would from a bare hilltop of the same size.
