Burgstall Altenschneeberg, Medieval castle ruins in Tiefenbach, Germany
The archaeological remains of this hilltop fortress rest upon a strategic spur at 765 meters above sea level, bordered by valleys of Schwarzach and Ascha rivers.
The first documented reference to the castle dates from 1237 with Dietricus iudex de Sneberc, suggesting construction by the Counts of Ortenburg in the 13th century.
The monument represents the medieval nobility period in Bavaria, with remnants of defensive structures indicating the architectural methods of fortification construction.
Visitors can reach the castle site through marked hiking trails starting from the Russenbräu inn parking lot in Tiefenbach, following the Tb01 path for 13 kilometers.
The oval-shaped castle ground measures 160 by 75 meters, featuring an upper castle section elevated 10 meters above the lower ward on a rocky ridge.
