Burgruine Altenburg, Medieval castle ruin in Felsberg, Germany
The castle ruin stands on a basalt summit at 160 meters elevation, overlooking the northern bank of the Eder River with its tall keep and remaining walls.
First documented in 1322, the castle served as the residence of the Counts von Felsberg and controlled the strategic crossing point over the Eder River.
The castle ruins represent the medieval architectural heritage of Hesse, featuring barrel-vaulted cellars and a former chapel that now houses a museum.
The castle remains in private ownership by the Boyneburg family and opens its gates to visitors during scheduled annual open house events.
During World War II, local residents found shelter in the ruins after flooding caused by the destruction of the nearby Edertalsperre dam.
