Burgruine Altenburg

Burgruine Altenburg, Medieval castle ruin in Felsberg, Germany

Description

Burgruine Altenburg is a medieval castle ruin perched on a basalt hilltop near Felsberg, overlooking the Eder River valley below. The site features a tall keep and substantial wall sections that showcase the scale of this former fortification.

History

The fortress was first documented in 1322 when it served as a seat of the Counts von Felsberg and guarded an important river crossing. Over succeeding centuries the site lost its strategic value and gradually fell into ruin.

Culture

The ruins hold local significance as a symbol of the region's medieval past and the prominence of the noble families who once ruled here. Visitors can observe architectural details in the remaining structures that reflect medieval building traditions.

Practical

The ruins remain in private ownership by the Boyneburg family and are only accessible during scheduled open house events throughout the year. Visitors should confirm opening dates in advance before making a trip to the site.

Did you know?

During World War II the ruins provided emergency shelter for local residents after the nearby Edertalsperre dam was destroyed, causing severe flooding in the region. This little-known chapter reveals how the abandoned fortress served an unexpected purpose in times of crisis.
