Burgruine Granegg, Medieval castle ruin in Egesheim, Germany.
Burgruine Granegg is a castle ruin near Egesheim in Baden-Württemberg, with stone walls and a remaining tower standing on Schlossfelsen at 921 meters elevation. The building remains spread across the plateau and still show the original layout of the fortification clearly.
The site was first recorded in 1102 as a fortress for the Michelstein lords. An earthquake damaged the structure in 1356, and forces from Rottweil destroyed it in 1377.
The ruins display medieval defensive building methods typical of the Swabian Jura region, using rough stone and cut block masonry techniques. Walking through the site lets you observe firsthand how structures were built during that era.
The site sits on elevated terrain and is best reached on foot, with a walk from the village of Egesheim recommended. The Swabian Alb Association has maintained the ruins since 1931, keeping them accessible to visitors.
The site gained its dual name Michelstein-Granegg because two different ruling families controlled it over time. The name reflects the complex ownership history of the location.
