Burg Thannstein

Burg Thannstein is a ruined castle situated on a granite ridge in the region. A round tower and several sections of wall remain visible, and visitors can see these remains without restrictions.

The fortification was first documented in 1281 and belonged to the von Tannstein family. The Zenger family took control in 1353 until Swedish forces destroyed it during the 17th century.

Theater productions use the ruins as a stage for stories about knights and bandits, bringing the medieval past to life for visitors. The site has become a place where locals and travelers connect with the region's layered history.

The ruins are located on Schlossberg Street and can be visited free of charge. The site is accessible at all times, though you should be prepared for walking over open ground to reach it.

Hidden beneath the castle is a small vaulted cellar partially carved into the rock, a remnant that survives from medieval times. This underground chamber demonstrates how builders worked with the natural stone to create secure storage spaces.
