Bürgerpark, Public park in Schwachhausen, Germany.
Bürgerpark is a 200-hectare property in Schwachhausen near Bremen Central Station featuring landscaped gardens, two lakes, walking paths, meadows, and forest areas. The grounds include recreational facilities such as a minigolf course and animal enclosure.
The site was created in 1866 when Bremen citizens purchased 45 hectares of farmland and hired landscape architect Wilhelm Benque to design it. It gradually expanded through successive acquisitions to reach its current size.
The park holds numerous sculptures and monuments created since its founding that document Bremen's history through art and memorials. These installations reflect important moments and figures that shaped the city's life.
The grounds offer boat rentals on the lake, minigolf, and various walking routes for different fitness levels and interests. A visit works throughout the year, with certain activities available depending on the season.
The grounds are funded entirely through the private Bürgerparkverein association and an annual lottery, without receiving regular public funding. This unusual model makes it a self-governed citizen project that has operated for over 150 years.
