Bürgerpark is a 200-hectare property in Schwachhausen near Bremen Central Station featuring landscaped gardens, two lakes, walking paths, meadows, and forest areas. The grounds include recreational facilities such as a minigolf course and animal enclosure.

In 1865, after the Second German Federal Shooting competition was held on the bare Bürgerweide, Bremen citizens formed a committee to reforest the meadow. The Senate and Bürgerschaft granted the planners 76 hectares, and ground was broken on 28 June 1866. Under director Wilhelm Benque, workers dug today's Emmasee and planted the first trees in spring 1867.

The park's name comes from the Bürgerweide, the meadow north of the city where the Second German Federal Shooting Competition drew several thousand marksmen in July 1865; the heat on the bare ground gave rise to the idea of a shooting range under trees. The Bürgerpark-Tombola raffle has been held every year from early February to May since 1953 and is one of the Bürgerparkverein's main sources of income. Among the grounds stand sculptures and monuments, some over 130 years old.

The park is not cut by any traffic road; the only continuous crossing is a wide closed route that starts at the police station in the east, passes north of the Emmasee and exits on the west side. Tram lines 5, 6 and 8 and bus lines 22 and 24 to 28 stop at Am Stern, Bürgerpark, Findorffallee, Weidedamm, Parkallee and Emmastraße/Bürgerpark. Bürgerpark and Stadtwald are separated by the Bremen–Hamburg railway; two small pedestrian underpasses at the outer edges link them.

The grounds are funded entirely through the private Bürgerparkverein association and an annual lottery, without receiving regular public funding. This unusual model makes it a self-governed citizen project that has operated for over 150 years.
