Castra Regina, Roman military fortress in Regensburg, Germany

Castra Regina is a Roman military fortress whose stone walls and foundations spread across central Regensburg, marking the original boundaries of the installation. The remains reveal how this strategic stronghold was laid out and organized.

Emperor Marcus Aurelius founded the fortress in 179 AD as a strategic defense for the northern Roman frontier. It served as a key garrison for protecting this distant province throughout its period of use.

The excavated layers beneath Neupfarrplatz Square show how Roman soldiers and later medieval Jewish residents occupied the same ground over centuries. You can observe the physical traces of both communities preserved side by side.

The Document Neupfarrplatz museum displays artifacts from excavations and allows you to view the exposed Roman layers beneath the square. The museum is the main visitor point where you can learn about the site with preserved objects on display.

Excavations uncovered a hoard of 684 Roman gold coins buried beneath the square, revealing the financial importance of the garrison. This discovery offers insight into the daily life and economic strength of the soldiers stationed there.
