Palais de Büsing, Neo-Baroque city palace in Offenbach am Main, Germany
The Büsingpalais is a two-story neobaroque city palace under a slate-covered mansard roof, its rendered facade divided by stone cornices and segmental-arched window surrounds. On the park side a terrace runs the full width, closed by a sandstone balustrade and reached by a stair flanked by two reclining lions that survived the 1943 air raid. Single-story colonnaded wings link the main building to two lower pavilions on Herrnstrasse.
Peter Bernard and Johann Georg d'Orville had a manor house with a landscape garden laid out here in the second half of the 18th century; in 1775 Goethe spent a summer in it with Lili Schönemann. In 1891 the property passed to Adolf Freiherr von Büsing-Orville, who from 1899 had architect Wilhelm Manchot enlarge it into a neo-baroque city palace, which gave it its name. The city of Offenbach acquired it in 1921 and used it as town hall; an air raid in December 1943 left only the outer walls. The side wings were rebuilt in 1952–53, the main wing in 1982–84.
The palace's name comes from Adolf Freiherr von Büsing-Orville, whose mother was a d'Orville; he had Wilhelm Manchot enlarge the manor into a neo-baroque city palace from 1899. Before World War I, Rudolf and Otto Linnemann of Frankfurt made stained glass for the building. In summer, concerts are held in the inner courtyard.
Parts of the palace are rented by the neighbouring hotel as conference rooms and for events of all kinds, and concerts are held in the inner courtyard in summer. The garden terrace, reached by the stair flanked by two reclining lions, faces the Büsingpark. Visitors should check with the hotel beforehand whether the rooms are open during an event.
The two reclining lions flanking the park-side staircase survived the December 1943 air raid that left only the outer walls of the palace standing. They are carved from sandstone and sit at the foot of the balustraded terrace steps, a detail easily missed when approaching from the street.
