Offenbach am Main

Offenbach am Main is a district town in Hesse that stretches along the southern bank of the Main River and connects residential areas with industrial zones. The built environment ranges from old quarters with multi-story houses to newer developments, while green spaces and parks lie between the neighborhoods.

A document from the year 977 mentions the settlement for the first time, when it stood under the rule of local noble families. Over the centuries the place grew into a center for crafts and trade, until it rose to town status in the 19th century.

The name comes from the medieval period and refers to a stream called Offa that flowed through the area. Today the town carries this old name forward, while cafés and shops gather around the market square, where residents do their shopping and sit on the terraces.

The streets and sidewalks are well accessible, so visitors can reach the different quarters on foot or by bike. Those arriving by public transport will find several train stations and bus stops offering connections to the surrounding area.

A museum on the edge of town displays collections related to leather processing and documents the former importance of this craft. The exhibition rooms preserve tools, samples and finished products from different eras.
