Cottbuser Ostsee, Artificial lake from former lignite mine near Cottbus, Germany.
Cottbuser Ostsee is an artificial lake created on the site of a former lignite mine near Cottbus in Brandenburg. It is being formed by flooding the open-pit mine site as part of a land reclamation project.
The Cottbus-Nord lignite mine ceased operations in late 2015, ending decades of open-pit mining in the area. After closure, the site was repurposed through a project to flood the mine pit and reclaim the land for recreational use.
The lake represents the region's shift from mining industry to nature and recreation, something visitors experience while exploring the shoreline and new facilities. This transformation shows how an industrial landscape becomes a place where people spend time in nature and unwind.
The lake can be viewed from several vantage points where you can observe its formation process. Walking paths and recreational areas are being developed around it as the project progresses.
The eastern shoreline includes specially designed islands that serve as refuge and protected habitats for birds and other wildlife. These natural spaces develop as the water fills and gradually create new habitats across the landscape.
