Distlergrotte, Natural monument cave in Neuhaus an der Pegnitz, Germany.
The Distlergrotte is a cave in Neuhaus an der Pegnitz that extends about 90 meters into the rock and reaches up to 5 meters in width. The interior shows multiple chambers with different rock walls and contains a pool with cold water.
The cave formed long ago through water flow in the limestone formation of the region. It was later recognized as an archaeological site and natural monument, and has been protected since then.
The cave is now a protected natural site that introduces visitors to the geology of the Pegnitzbach valley region. The silence inside and the natural stone surfaces invite exploration.
A visit is best between spring and fall when conditions are more stable. A flashlight is necessary because the interior is dark and the ground can be wet in places.
Old boreholes from earlier explorations are still visible on the walls, showing how long this cave system has been studied. The underground pool maintains the same cold temperature year-round.
