Sterntor, Medieval city gate in Bonn, Germany.
The Sterntor is a medieval city gate in Bonn with a stone archway and corner towers topped with crenellations. The structure preserves fragments of the original city wall and a semi-circular defense tower that once protected the medieval city.
The gate was built in 1244 as part of Bonn's medieval fortifications and represents the city's early expansion during that era. It was torn down in 1898 but rebuilt at Bottlerplatz in 1900, making it a reconstructed monument from that period.
The outer archway displays two stone reliefs from the 1600s showing the crucified Christ with Mary and John, as well as an image of Mary expressing sorrow. These religious carvings shaped how people saw the gate and connected it to the church's role in medieval city life.
The gate stands at Bottlerplatz near the city center where several pedestrian paths meet, making it easy to find and use as a landmark. The square offers convenient access from different directions and integrates well with the network of paths through the downtown area.
Inside the gate lies an original barrel vault from the 1600s that shows the archaeological importance of the structure. This hidden interior element often goes unnoticed by visitors who focus on the visible outer features.
