Rathaus Schmargendorf, Gothic town hall in Schmargendorf, Germany.
Rathaus Schmargendorf is a two-wing red brick building crowned by a central tower rising 46 meters high. The facade displays decorative elements such as gables, turrets, and varied brick patterns in the Brick Gothic style.
The building was constructed between 1900 and 1902 as the administrative center of the independent municipality of Schmargendorf. After Schmargendorf was incorporated into Berlin in 1920, the building remained an important public institution.
The council chamber displays early 1900s German craftsmanship through wooden wall panels and bronze chandeliers designed by Otto Nachtigall. These details reflect the care that Schmargendorf invested in its municipal building.
Today the building houses a civil registry office for wedding ceremonies, a music school, and a public library branch. The site is accessible and you can view the public areas during opening hours.
The building gained fame as the location of several prominent wedding ceremonies, including the marriage of Albert Einstein and actress Romy Schneider. These historical moments make it a special place in Berlin's story.
