Spoil tip Beckstrasse, Mining spoil tip in Bottrop, Germany.
Spoil tip Beckstrasse is an artificial hill formed from mining waste with a tall steel tetrahedron structure at its summit. The hill rises to about 110 meters, and visitors can see the industrial landscape of North Rhine-Westphalia from the top platform.
The site was created between 1963 and 1980 as a waste pile from the Prosper-Haniel coal mine, containing about 11.8 million cubic meters of mining material. The tetrahedron structure was added later to transform this industrial remnant into a regional landmark.
The tetrahedron structure marks how industrial areas have become cultural landmarks in the Ruhr region. Today it serves as a gathering place where people experience the transformation of the landscape and what the region has become.
Access to the tetrahedron platform involves climbing 387 steps along the outside of the steel structure. The route is exposed to the elements and accessible year-round, so wear appropriate clothing for outdoor conditions.
From 2009 to 2014, a hydrogen-powered shuttle bus ran here to carry visitors to the platform, representing an early experiment in clean mobility technology. This project made the site a testing ground for zero-emission public transport.
