Schlesischer Busch, Public park in Alt-Treptow, Berlin, Germany
Schlesischer Busch is a public park of about 4.4 hectares along the Landwehr Canal in Alt-Treptow with paths through natural areas. A four-story concrete tower from East German times stands as a protected monument in the park and was restored in 2004.
After the Wall was built in 1961, the site became part of the border strip and was officially designated a restricted zone in 1974. The guard towers were erected in the late 1970s and have defined the landscape of this former border area ever since.
The former guard tower now hosts exhibitions about the Berlin Wall and contemporary art, allowing visitors to experience the viewpoint of a border installation firsthand.
The park is freely accessible with multiple entrances from nearby bus stops. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the paths go through natural terrain and can become muddy in rainy weather.
Visitors can climb to the observation platform of the tower for an unobstructed view of the canal and surrounding green areas, offering a rare experience of a former control position. This shift in perspective makes the physical proximity to the former border directly perceptible.
