E3, Wooden residential building in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, Germany
The E3 building reaches seven floors and contains eight residential apartments spread across 987 square meters of living space at Esmarchstraße 3.
Completed in 2008, the E3 building marked a milestone as the first seven-story timber structure constructed in an urban setting in Central Europe.
The E3 building received the German Timber Construction Award in 2009 for its innovative approach to sustainable urban residential architecture.
Each floor contains one apartment with flexible room layouts due to the absence of interior load-bearing walls and the presence of ceiling-high windows.
The construction required 700 pine and spruce trees, incorporating concrete shafts for stability and an external concrete stairway for fire safety regulations.
