E3, Wooden residential building in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, Germany
E3 is a seven-story residential building in Prenzlauer Berg constructed entirely from wood, containing eight apartments organized across its floors. The living spaces feature large windows and open layouts that can be adapted to different needs, with concrete cores providing structural support.
The building was completed in 2008 and represented the first seven-story timber residence in an urban European setting at that time. This pioneering project set a new standard for sustainable construction in the city.
The E3 building received the German Timber Construction Award in 2009 for its innovative approach to sustainable urban residential architecture.
The building can be viewed from the street and its timber construction is clearly visible from the exterior. Its location along Esmarchstraße makes it easy to include in a walk through the neighborhood.
The structure required around 700 pine and spruce trees and merges wooden frames with concrete cores for added stability. The external concrete staircase is a distinctive feature designed to meet fire safety codes.
