Eilenburger Chemiewerk, Chemical factory complex in Eilenburg, Germany
The Eilenburger Chemiewerk is a factory complex in Saxony situated on the Mulde River and composed of multiple production buildings, storage facilities, and administrative structures. The site features buildings from different periods connected by roads and a former internal railway network that once moved raw materials and finished goods throughout the grounds.
The factory was established in 1887 when a Leipzig businessman founded it to produce celluloid materials. Over the following decades, the site expanded into making different chemical products and plastics that became significant to regional manufacturing.
The complex displays industrial culture through its structures and production spaces that reflect how chemical work was organized and performed. Walking through the site, you notice the practical design of buildings meant to house specific manufacturing steps and worker routines.
The grounds are largely open for walking and exploring the various buildings and facilities at your own pace. Wear sturdy shoes as the terrain can be uneven, and visit during daylight hours for the best views of the structures and their architectural details.
In 1936 the factory started making Decelith, a specialized PVC plastic that proved useful for many different applications over decades. This product line remains part of what is manufactured here today, demonstrating the site's long continuity as a working factory.
