Klinkerwerk, Former brick factory in Bergedorf, Germany
Klinkerwerk is a former brick factory in Bergedorf consisting of multiple buildings, a tall chimney, and production halls built near the Elbe River for manufacturing clinker bricks. The site comprises various structures that have been preserved and repurposed in different ways.
The SS acquired the site in September 1938 through their company Deutsche Erd- und Steinwerke GmbH to produce construction materials for Hamburg's expansion. The location was subsequently used as a concentration camp and played a significant role in this dark chapter of history.
The eastern section displays an exhibition about forced labor and brick production during the concentration camp period. Visitors can see how this dark chapter of the site is documented and preserved for remembrance today.
After the war, parts of the site were converted to boat storage, while other sections remain restricted for safety reasons. When visiting, you can explore the accessible areas and view the exhibition in the eastern section.
The facility tested experimental tunnel kilns and wet pressing equipment to develop new production methods, but these attempts largely failed. Today, these remnants remind visitors of the unsuccessful innovation attempts of that era.
