Borghorster Elblandschaft, Protected natural area in Bergedorf, Germany
Borghorster Elblandschaft is a protected nature reserve in Bergedorf comprising inland dunes, pine forests, wet meadows, and a water body formed by a dike breach. The reserve divides into three distinct zones with different landscapes and ecological features.
The area was designated as a Flora-Fauna-Habitat protection zone under European guidelines in 1999 and gained its official protected status the following year. This protection reflects recognition of the region's ecological importance.
The Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) Hamburg manages the preservation of this area, focusing on maintaining natural habitats and protecting endangered species.
The reserve is accessible on foot with paths through the different landscape zones. Wearing comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for wet conditions is recommended for your visit.
The reserve supports more than 360 plant species, with a significant portion listed as endangered in Hamburg. This botanical richness makes it an important refuge for threatened plant communities.
