Fischtreppe Geesthacht, Fish ladder in Geesthacht, Germany

The fish ladder consists of 49 connected basins, each measuring 16 meters wide and 9 meters long, spanning a total length of 550 meters.

The facility opened in 2010 as an ecological compensation measure for the Moorburg power plant in Hamburg, with Vattenfall operating it until 2021.

The structure demonstrates German engineering excellence in environmental protection by enabling fish migration through a series of carefully designed water basins.

The ladder allows approximately 50 different fish species, including pike, zander, and European catfish, to navigate past the dam using designated pools.

This facility holds the distinction of being Europe's largest fish ladder, processing up to 30,000 fish daily through its monitoring and registration system.
