Eichholzmaar, Volcanic lake in Vulkaneifel, Germany
The Eichholzmaar forms a circular water basin with a diameter of 120 meters and reaches a maximum depth of 3 meters in the landscape.
The formation occurred when rising magma at 1200 degrees Celsius interacted with groundwater, creating an explosive crater in Devonian sandstone thousands of years ago.
Scientific studies from universities in Jena and Frankfurt continue to examine the ecological patterns and geological composition of this natural formation.
Visitors can reach the lake through a 300-meter walk from the parking area on the road between Steffeln and Duppach.
Two mineral springs, Steffelner Dress and Aueler Dress, emerge near the lake, positioned 300 meters upstream and 270 meters downstream respectively.
