Eichholzmaar

Eichholzmaar, Volcanic lake in Vulkaneifel, Germany

The Eichholzmaar is a volcanic crater lake with a nearly circular basin about 120 meters across and reaching depths of 3 meters in places. The water body sits nestled in the rolling volcanic landscape of the region.

The lake formed thousands of years ago when rising magma collided with groundwater, creating an explosive crater in ancient sandstone. This volcanic activity fundamentally shaped the character of the local landscape.

The lake draws visitors interested in volcanic geology and serves as a destination for local walks through the Vulkaneifel region. People come here to see firsthand how geological forces shaped the landscape and continue to shape their surroundings.

The lake is easily reached by walking about 300 meters from the road between Steffeln and Duppach. The path is flat and takes only a few minutes, making it accessible for families and casual walkers.

Two mineral springs, Steffelner Dress and Aueler Dress, flow from the area above and below the lake. These natural springs show that the volcanic region remains hydrologically active today.
