Saugarten is a game reserve within the Dresdner Heide forest district, featuring multiple walking paths throughout its terrain. The distinctive layout consists of eight pathways radiating from a central pillar, creating a recognizable star pattern.
The site originated around 1560 as a Treybegarten, serving as the launching point for hunting expeditions under Saxon rulers. An architectural structure by M.D. Pöppelmann was added to the grounds in later years.
The central column, erected in 1926, marks the historical importance of this location as a hunting meeting point. Visitors can observe how the eight-pointed star layout was designed to organize expeditions through the forest.
Multiple walking routes connect through this location, offering forest trails suited to different experience levels. Sturdy footwear is recommended and visitors should allow time to explore the pathways comfortably.
Remnants of stone walls are still visible, once used to contain wild boars before their release for royal hunting events in the early 1800s. These structures offer a rare glimpse into the practical hunting methods of that era.
