St. Marien, Gothic Revival church in Ahlen, Germany
St. Marien is a Gothic Revival church in central Ahlen with a striking west tower and sandstone exterior cladding. Its interior follows a stepped hall layout with smaller chapel annexes positioned along the sides.
The church was built between 1902 and 1904 according to designs by Ludwig Becker and Wilhelm Sunder-Plassmann. It was constructed on the site where an earlier Gothic hall church had previously stood.
The name St. Marien reflects the church's dedication to Mary in Catholic tradition, as seen in the religious artworks displayed throughout the interior. These pieces from different centuries shape how visitors experience and understand the space.
The church is located centrally in Ahlen and is easily reached on foot from the main streets of the city center. It is open for visitors to explore the architecture and interior at their own pace.
Eight bells hang in the tower, including one from 1689 that survived numerous renovations and changes over the centuries. This historic bell still rings regularly, connecting present-day visitors with a long past.
