Maria-Himmelfahrt-Kirche, Gothic Revival church in Schönau im Schwarzwald, Germany
The Maria-Himmelfahrt-Kirche is a Gothic Revival church building in Schönau im Schwarzwald featuring a 90-meter-high bell tower with balustrades, pinnacles, and an octagonal pyramid crowned by a tower sphere. This structure dominates the town skyline with its distinctive vertical form.
The original place of worship was established in 1158 under the direction of Abbot Günther of St. Blasien. However, the current structure was built in 1908 following a major reconstruction.
The altar displays representations of Mary and saints that visitors see upon entering the building. These artworks shape the interior and tell stories of Mary's life through their sculpted forms.
Access to the church is typically free, but certain areas may require respect and quiet as with all places of worship. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing and be aware of visiting hours, which may be tied to religious activities.
The current building was intentionally constructed at a different angle from the original structure. This shift required substantial foundation work to stabilize the new position.
