Sonderwaffenlager Großenhain, Military bunker complex at Grossenhain airfield, Germany.
Sonderwaffenlager Großenhain is a bunker system at a former Soviet airfield with two concrete bunkers connected to each other. Each bunker has its own engine room, and both are joined by a loading platform.
The bunker system was built between 1972 and 1974 by Soviet forces. Construction materials were transported at night from Poland to construct the facility.
The bunker system shows how Soviet forces planned and built their facilities in East Germany during the Cold War. Visitors today can see how the spaces functioned and what role they played in the military infrastructure.
Bunker one serves as an exhibition space about airfield history, while bunker two functions as a radio communication station. Visitors should note that both spaces are underground and have accordingly limited lighting and ventilation.
The structure features circular prefabricated concrete sections that form tunnel shapes and was surrounded by triple fences. Specialized KGB guard units protected the facility to safeguard its strategic importance.
