Elberfeld-West is a municipal district in Wuppertal extending across both sides of the Wupper River with diverse settlement patterns. The area stretches geographically from Nützenberg mountain in the north to Kiesberg in the south and comprises several neighborhoods.
The locality of Sonnborn, now part of the district, dates back to 874 when it served as a Frankish fortified outpost. Over the centuries the area transformed from a strategic position into a residential zone during industrialization.
The Zoo Quarter displays preserved villas from the 19th century that reflect the appearance of an affluent residential area. The architecture and green spaces tell of a time when this area was a preferred neighborhood for merchants and industrialists.
