Elbhof, Commerce building in Neustadt, Germany.
Elbhof is a commerce building in Hamburg-Neustadt designed as a business and warehouse facility with the traditional Hamburg layout of a front section and courtyard wing. The facade is decorated with bronze sculptures and the city coat of arms, while the structure contains multiple stories with regularly spaced windows.
The building was constructed between 1904 and 1905 according to architect Walter Martens' designs for the AEG company. During World War II the structure sustained serious damage, but was restored in 1990 and 1991 when the original copper roof design was returned to its former appearance.
The bronze figures on the facades show scenes related to water and trade, reflecting how central the port was to Hamburg's identity. When you walk past the building, you can see these sculptures directly above the entrances and understand why maritime themes were important to merchants here.
The building is located at Steinhöft 9 and is easy to find near Baumwall station. The site can be accessed from both streets and waterways, making a visit flexible and straightforward.
After war damage, the building received a simple flat roof until restoration work in the 1990s brought back the original copper roof design. This change shows how much the post-war period had altered the building's historic appearance.
