Schillerhaus, Literary museum in Gohlis, Germany
The Schillerhaus is a preserved farmhouse from 1717 in Gohlis that now operates as a museum. The exhibition displays objects from the poet's era and documents his connection to this location and to the city of Leipzig.
The building was erected in 1717 as a farmhouse and retained its original form with a three-sided courtyard. The location gained importance when Friedrich Schiller stayed there in 1785 and wrote the poem An die Freude.
The house carries the name of the famous poet Friedrich Schiller, who lived and worked here in 1785. Visitors can see how his life and creative work looked at that time, and the rooms give an impression of his time in Leipzig.
The museum occupies the upper floor of the 1717 farmhouse at Menckestraße 42 in Gohlis; the rooms are reached by stairs, and the historic building has no lift. The courtyard and the farm garden behind the house are laid out as a Bauerngarten recreated in 2002 on the historical model. The permanent exhibition Götterfunke, shown since April 2023, holds around 100 objects.
A stick incendiary bomb broke through the roof on 4 December 1943 and lodged in Schiller's former sleeping chamber; it was removed, and valuable exhibits were then moved to Wurzen Cathedral, where some are counted as war losses.
