Friedenskirche, Protestant church in Mülheim district, Cologne, Germany
The Friedenskirche is a Protestant church building in Cologne's Mülheim district featuring a cross-shaped layout and a tower with Neo-Romanesque design. The structure displays three high sound windows on each side of the tower, characteristic of 19th-century church architecture.
The building grew from a long history starting in 1610 when Lutherans and Calvinists first received permission to construct a church here. After destruction by Rhine ice floes in 1784, it was rebuilt in 1786 at its present location by architect Wilhelm Hellwig.
The Peace Church name reflects the merger of Lutheran and Reformed congregations that came together at this place. Today visitors see a space where different Protestant traditions share a single building.
The location is easily reached via Wallstrasse in the Mülheim neighborhood and remains accessible to visitors. The building continues to serve as an active space for worship services and community gatherings throughout the year.
The building survived multiple crises, most remarkably its reconstruction after the 1784 ice disaster that nearly destroyed it completely. The decision to rebuild it at the same spot demonstrates the deep attachment of the congregation to this location.
